Muscles are like Sponges!
Hydration is one of the most rampant problems in the gym today.
It is rare to find an athlete that knows exactly how to maximize their hydration and even fewer who actually put it into practice effectively.
Most gymnasts do not know that their hydration status is holding them back in terms of flexibility and putting them at great risk for injury.
Muscles are like sponges.
They love to stay fully hydrated and when given the opportunity they soak up as much water as they can get.
On the other hand, when muscles have not been given the opportunity for hydration they become dry and brittle just like a sponge! They tear easily, do not heal well, and have a hard time turning protein into strength.
If a dehydrated athlete were to step on a mat funny or land incorrectly they would have a high risk of twisting their ankle.
The muscles and tendons of a fully hydrated athlete, on the other hand, would have a greater resilience and flexibility and therefore have a lesser chance of injury.
The bottom line is dehydrated athletes experience more injuries and have not realized their full potential in both strength and flexibility.
